ESRI CEO Jack Dangermond visits IWHR and lectures on GIS-enabled smart water management

CEO and Co-founder of Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) Jack Dangermond visited IWHR, met with Chinese Vice Minister of Water Resources Liu Ning, IWHR President Kuang Shangfu and other officials from both the ministry and the institute, and lectured on a smart GIS enabling smarter water management at IWHR's Global Vision Forum, to which world renowned scholars are invited to give presentations.

Starting with the G20 Summit in Hangzhou, Liu Ning talked on the theme of development, and said technical innovations were the key points for development, for which cooperation and communication were vital. It is to this end that IWHR launches the international communication platform of Global Vision Forum to invite famous scholars and researchers for academic exchange, scientific debate and joint development.

The vice minister also talked about ESRI and the development and achievement of GIS in this US-based institute. He emphasized the comprehensiveness, advancement, innovation and wide application of the technology, and pointed out GIS was the fundamental supporting technology for flood control and drought mitigation in China, and would play an important role in intelligent water management in China in the future.

In his lecture titled "Smart GIS enabling smarter water management", Jack Dangermond pointed out GIS had become a basic language and important tool in social development and management. In his report, GIS-based real-time data, precious analysis and visualization, connecting technology, comprehensive public intervention, multi-directional communication and sharing were covered.

In the ensuing question-and-answer session, Mr. Dangermond also summarized the six processes of GIS-supported decision making, and analyzed the changing trend from technology supporting decision making to decision-maker seeking for technological support.
