Research on Key Problems of the Mechanism and Prevention of Embankment Foundation Piping

Piping caused most of bank breaches in history. Based on the understanding of the occurrence, development and bank breach damage mechanism of piping, this project conducts research on key technologies of preventing embankment foundation piping.

Major research contents of this project include:

(1)Research on the occurrence and development of embankment foundation piping and the functions and rational design of hanging type of cut-off walls

(2)Analysis and evaluation on the seepage-proof effects of enclosed, semi-enclosed and hanging types of cut-off walls, and discussing the seepage-proof effects of different types of seepage-proof walls through a numerical calculation method

(3) Statistical analysis on dangerous situations of embankment foundation piping, survey, research and evaluation on the rational scope and effects of weighty blanket, and deduction of theoretical formula of double-layer embankment foundation weighty blanket design

(4) Research and establishment of the mathematic method of piping occurrence and development and the finite program of simulating piping dynamic development, and calculation and analysis on the direction, part of the piping development and functions of cut-off walls.

The basic theories and results of the application technologies of this project boast a certain value in guidance and application of the design safety management and disaster-relief during flood seasons and have bright prospects for application and popularization.
