Laboratory of Materials and Structures for Waterproof & Waterstop

The laboratory mainly researches on the development and the application technology of structures and materials for the waterproofs, the waterstops as well as the repairing and protection of old hydraulic structures. Since 1990s, research projects of the Ninth five-year National Key Technologies R&D Program, National Natural Science Foundation, Key Technology Program of State Power Company have been undertaken for the slab joint waterstops of high concrete face rockfill dam, from which new type waterstop structures for perimeter joint of the facing slab, GB sealant materials, design method of copper waterstop strip and rubber waterstop strip have been put forwarded to the demand of project construction of Shuibuya CFRD (233m high), Hongjiadu CFRD (180m high), Shanbanxi CFRD (185m high), etc. In the same period, joint waterstops for the large aqueduct of Dongshen project has also been developed and adopted.

Introduction to the main achievement

Trough the a series of research projects relevant to the slab joint waterstop of concrete face rockfill dam (CFRD), the main achievements and development include the new top waterstop structure, GB series waterstop materials (GB sealant, GB plastic filler, GB compsite plate, etc.), size design method for copper strip and rubber waterstop, which have been widely adopted by two dozens of high CFRDs of both domestic and abroad. According to the demand of Jilintai project, a CFRD in a high seismic zone, the top defense line of waterstop has been modified to be of a self-healing type, which incorporates the GBW hydrophilic expansion rubber filler inside. Based on these achievements, two related industry standards were presided to draft out and issued by the National Development and Reform Commission of China, which plays a significant guiding role in the CFRD construction of China, and have also been adopted by some CFRDs in other countries, such as Bakun project in Malaysia and Nam Num 2 in Laos. At present, the waterstop structure and materials for 300m-level high CFRD has been under evaluation and test, according to the construction demand of CFRD of the height in the west of China.
