Hydraulic Asphalt Concrete Laboratory

The Hydraulic Asphalt Concrete Laboratory is a relatively modernized laboratory in test equipment and technology among domestic competitors. Over the past decade, the Lab has assumed a number of project research and test tasks.

The Lab is mainly engaged in hydraulic asphalt concrete researches, including those of development and application of polymer modified asphalt concrete, performance and construction technology of hydraulic asphalt concrete, seepage control structures of hydraulic asphalt concrete, etc.

Project examples

·Construction of asphalt concrete facing in the upper reservoir of Tianhuangping Pumped Storage Power Station from 1995 to 1998, assisting to STRABAG Tiefbau GmbH;
·Key Research Project of State Electric Coompany from 1998 to 2001– Research of Construction Technology of roller compacted asphalt concrete revetment.
·Indoor mix design and test of asphalt concrete for Beijing Yangjiatai Reservoir Rehabilitation Project;
·Construction of asphalt concrete facing in Nangudong Reservoir Repairing Project in 2004, including the mix design test and the on-site quality control;
·Mix design and test of asphalt concrete, facing connection model test for Xilongchi Pumped Storage Power Station between 2004 and 2006;
·National High-tech R&D Program (863 Program) of China: Development of the polymer modified asphalt concrete slab for the anti-frozen and anti-seepage lining of canal;
·Construction of asphalt concrete facing in Baoquan Pumped Storage Project between 2006 and 2007, including the mix design test and the on-site quality control.

Introduction of Research and Development

The Lab has presided the research of construction technology of roller compacted asphalt concrete facing, a key research project of the State Electric Company, the site lab testing of Nangudong dam repairing project and Baoquan pumped storage project, and co-drafted the Test code for hydraulic bitumen concrete DL/T 5362-2006. In view of the raw materials in Baoquan, Nangudong and other projects, the Lab optimized the mix proportion of asphalt concrete, which met the design requirements. For the project of Baoquan and Xilongchi, a variety of model tests have been made to the various asphalt concrete facing connection structures. All the results have been applied in project, part of which have been incorporated in the related specifications, and referenced in other domestic hydraulic asphalt concrete works. At present, the Lab has been presiding the amendments of the Construction Specification of Roller Compacted Asphalt Concrete Facings and Cores for the Embankment Dam and the Design Specification of Roller Compacted Asphalt Concrete Facings and Cores for the Embankment Dam, which are sponsored by the Ministry of Water Resources of China.
