Abstract: Drought indices are important parameters of monitoring the change of drought and flood. It can provide support to disaster warning, impact assessment, emergency management and decision making. This paper used monthly precipitation and monthly average temperature of Sanjiang Plain from 1961 to 2014 to calculate standardized precipitation-evapotranspiration index (SPEI) under 3 kinds of time scales. It analyzed temporal variation characteristics of drought frequency, drought extent, and drought intensity. Results showed that:(1) In general, drought extent and intensity were on the slight rise. Drought intensity was the highest in summer. Drought extent was the biggest in autumn. (2) The drought intensity increased from southeast to Northwest. Hegang,Fujin,Jiamusi,Luobei and Jixian were areas with highest drought frequencies. (3) The drought conditions in the Sanjiang plain fluctuated. The drought situation in the Sanjiang Plain was the most severe in 1970s and 2000s.

Keywords: temporal and spatial distributions; standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index(SPEI); drought indices; Sanjiang Plain
