Abstract: Vertical slot fishways are widely used over the world because of their high efficiency of fish passing and adapting to the change of water level. In the earlier studies on flow in the vertical slot fishway, the author obtained logical geometric scale of the vertical slot fishway, which included ratio of length to width of pools, central baffle length, vertical slot width, etc. However, the logical geometric scale was obtained at the condition of the average velocity of only 1.0m/s in vertical slot section. For different flow velocities, whether the geometric scale is suitable or not is still a question for further research. In this paper, the flow in vertical slot fishways is studied when the value of velocity in vertical slot section is 0.8, 1.0, 1.2, 1.5, 1.8, 2.0m/s separately by a numerical simulation method. The results show that in the range of 0.8~2.0m/s, the value of velocity in vertical slot section has no significant influence on the distribution of mainstream zone, the attenuation of velocity along mainstream, the velocity distribution of vertical section, etc. So that geometric scale is general to a certain extent. In addition, the velocity distribution of vertical slot section and mainstream in all pools are studied.

Key words: vertical slot fishway, numerical simulation, velocity, mainstream zone
