Survey-based delineation of the Taipu River ecoregion and aquatic environment improvement measures

Abstract: As one of the major water sources for the upper reache of the Huangpu River, the Taipu River aquatic environment protection is an essential task. This paper analyzes the survey data on the water quality, the plankton, and the aquatic plants distribution of the Taipu River, gets some information about river ecoregion delineation, and puts forward some aquatic environment improvement measures. The results of the survey show that the Taipu River, which connects with surrounding lakes, has seriously overweight TP and TN, and it is moderately contaminated and eutrophication. With considering the above factors and the land use along watersides, the Taipu River can be delineated into 5 aquatic partitions. Water pollutions come from industrial and municipal point sources, tributaries and ships. The main improvement measures of aquatic environment are to control point sources, to restore vegetation along the watersides to filter pollution, and to protect and reconstruct aquatic plants zone.
