Dr. KUANG Shangfu welcomed the UNESCO delegation and expressed his sincere congratulations to Dr. Shabbaz Kan on his appointment as the Director of the UNESCO Beijing Office in March this year. He looked back on the cooperation between IWHR and UNESCO, including the joint release of the Water Education English series in March and the co-organization of the UNESCO-ISI Online Training Workshop on Sediment Transport Measurement and Monitoring in July. He briefed the delegation upon the operation of the International Research and Training Center on Erosion and Sediment (IRTCES), the first Category 2 Center under the auspices of UNESCO stationed in IWHR.

Dr. KUANG Shangfu also proposed plans for future cooperation between IWHR and UNESCO to strengthen global water education, expand the influence of UNESCO Category 2 Centers, and broaden the international exchanges on water culture.

Professor Shabbaz Kan appreciated the contribution IWHR made to water resources development in China and the whole world. He stated the willingness of the UNESCO Beijing Office, a UNESCO regional office with education, culture, natural sciences, social and human sciences, and communication and information as its five main focuses, to enhance collaboration with IWHR to bridge the gap between water science research and water education, improve the platform for international sediment research, further increase the influence of IRTCES, and explore effective methods to boost the international exchanges upon water culture.

The two sides also shared insights on China’s achievements in improving water ecological civilization and the related publication and promotion, middle- and long-term water education, and the building of a community of shared water future.
