Representatives from both sides also discussed the latest trends of China-Europe cooperation on water science and technologies. Experts shared achievements of several Partnership Instrument (PI) projects in rural water and food security, water and urbanization, river basin management and ecological security, and water and energy security – the four focus areas where CEWP cooperation is implemented.

China and Europe are long-time water partners, and both are powerhouses of water sci-tech development and management. In 2012, the two sides initiated the CEWP. Since then, eight high-level annual dialogues has been held under this framework, involving nearly 20 EU countries. The Platform has been effectively faciliating China-EU scientific collaboration and knowledge sharing.

Sci-tech innovation is one of the three pillars supporting China-EU water cooperation. Areas of collaboration include water resources management and monitoring, river basin management, flood control, water-saving irrigation, water resources protection and ecological restoration, water supply and sanitation, sponge cities, water reuse, agriculture and rural development, food and energy security, etc. Research institutes and universities from the two sides have been constantly deepening their ties through tangible projects.
