From June 9-14, 2019, the 87th Annual Conference of International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD) was held in Ottawa, the capital of Canada, with the presence of over 1,300 delegates from more than 70 countries around the world. Headed by IWHR professor JIA Jinsheng, who is also the Deputy Director of State Key Laboratory of Simulation and Regulation of Water Cycle in River Basin and the vice president as well as Secretary General of Chinese National Committee on Large Dams (CHINCOLD), a big Chinese delegation of 38 officials and experts from the water sector including 17 IWHR experts attended the event.

IWHR experts participated in various academic activities during the conference. Professor JIA Jinsheng as the Chair of the Technical Committee on Cemented Material Dams presided over the session of this committee on June 10.

Other experts also participated in relevant sessions of difference technical committees and exchanged with other experts on the technical progress of the field and the work of the technical committee.

On the afternoon of June 11, ICOLD-APG Session was held with the participants of over 80 delegates from 12 countries. China as the President and Secretary General country hosted this conference. ICOLD President Michael Rogers, Secretary General Michel De Vivo delivered his opening address for the meeting. Professor JIA Jinsheng attend the meeting. IWHR professor XU Zeping made a keynote speech on dam safety.

Five IWHR experts, including IWHR professor LIU Yi, were enlisted as the new members of technical committees, such as the committee on Computational Aspects of Analysis and Design of Dams, adding up to the total 24 Chinese experts in ICOLD technical committees by far.
Availing the opportunity of this ICOLD Annual Conference, CHINCOLD also further developed its cooperation with the relevant foreign agencies and organizations of dams. For instance, CHINCOLD singed MOU with Comite Brasileiro Grandes Barragens (the National Committee on Large Dams in Brazil) and Comité Nacional Espa?ol de Grandes Presas (Spainish National Committee on Large Dams) respectively, to expand their cooperation in the field of dam safety and to jointly promote the evaluation and selection of Outstanding International Dam Engineers. A cooperation agreement was also signed with Aqua-Media International Ltd to deepen their cooperation in media report.
CHINCOLD also exchanged ideas with the technical committee on Capacity Building and Dams upon the joint organization of a roundtable on the sustainable development of dams in relation to the capacity building of developing countries during the 8th International Symposium on Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) Dams in Kunming, China in September this year.

IWHR experts also participated in the technical exhibition of the conference, where they demonstrated China’s typical hydropower projects under construction, and the progress China has been making in relevant dam building technologies, construction materials and products development, dam inspection and dynamic control, underwater seepage detection and deep water cleaning technologies, etc.
