Abstract
The main problem existing in the Yellow River is the excessive sediment supply and relative insufficient runoff, which results in severe sedimentation in the lower Yellow River and the formation of ‘perched river’. The situation of flood control becomes more serious. How to reduce the deposition becomes one of the main objectives in regulating the Yellow River. At present, building large hydro-project is an effective and feasible measure which can not only optimize the water-sediment combination to reduce deposition but also earn additional time for engineers to conduct soil-and-water conservation. To better understand the sedimentation processes, sedimentation reduction efficiency and non-deposition period, this paper presents numerical simulation and analysis of 18 options for the sedimentation processes and developing trend in the lower Yellow River for conditions such as sole reservoir operation, two-reservoir combined operation, and three-reservoir combined operation. In addition, based on the observed data since the operation of Sanmenxia Reservoir and the simulation results, the implicit mechanism between large hydro-project operation and lower channel evolution is analyzed. The relationship between the sedimentation in the lower Yellow River and the flow-sediment condition released from Xiaolangdi Reservoir, as well as the critical equilibrium of sedimentation, are established, which provide a scientific basis for reducing deposition effectively by optimizing the operation of hydro-project.
