Professor Kuniyoshi Takeuchi had been a professor in hydrology and water resources at University of Yamanashi for more than 30 years, having taught hydrological processes, modelling and management of water resource systems. His research area covers hydrological statistics, reservoir operation, remote sensing, flood and drought analyses, distributed hydrological models especially for macro-scale hydrological simulation and water-related disaster management. He is now serving as the founding director of International Center for Water Hazard and Risk Management (ICHARM) under the auspices of UNESCO established in 2006 hosted by Public Works Research Institute (PWRI) in Tsukuba, Japan.
Professor Takeuchi got BS (1966) and MS (1968) in Civil Engineering at University of Tokyo, and Ph.D. (1972) in City and Regional Planning at University of North Carolina. He has been engaged in UNESCO IHP (International Hydrological Program) activities for a long time serving as the secretary of IHP Regional Steering Committee for Southeast Asia and the Pacific (RSC) for 1992-1998 and as the chairperson of IHP Inter-Governmental Council for 1998-2000. He was also involved in IAHS (International Association of Hydrological Sciences) activities and served as president for 2001-2005 promoting the establishment of IAHS Predictions in Ungaged Basins (PUB) program.
