The
Institute has been very active in international cooperation and exchange
in the sector of water science and technology. Its activities cover information
exchange, scholar visiting, joint group for investigation and research,
project consultation service, design and bidding, high-tech product import
and export, implementation
excursion
and training, etc. In 1993, an Import-and-Export Company was set up. Since
then, its annual profit reached one million USD in average.
IWHR has established various and extensive collaborative
relationship with world famous universities, institutes and companies,
including the signing of 12 agreements for long-term cooperation. Annually,
the Institute receives 200 foreign visitors, sends 100 engineers for abroad
mission.
IWHR has conducted 90 projects at
home jointly with foreign partners, covering flood control, sedimentation,
water quality, irrigation and drainage, dam engineering, geotechnics, hydraulic
machinery and automation etc., among which more than 20 items were entrusted
from abroad by utilizing IWHR¡¯s laboratories. Seven projects were implemented
abroad through contracting and bidding, such as a hydropower station¡¯s
design in Malaysia, flood control planning in Bangladesh, rubber dam construction
in
Vietnam
and Bangladesh, laboratory planning in Iran, etc.
Chinese projects which are funded by ADB, WB, UN, EC and
other countries¡¯ governments were implemented by IWHR¡¯s experts together
with other international and domestic experts, such as
Water Resources Management in North China, Water Resources Development
in North Hainan, Master Plan of Sustainable Water Resources Development
in North Xinjiang, Water and Soil Management in the Huang-Huai-Hai
Plain, Support for the Sustainable Development in the Yellow River
Delta and Strategic Options for the Water Sector, etc.
Four Secretariats of the National Commissions corresponding to ICOLD, ICID, IAHR and IWRA, are seated in the Institute. The Institute was the organizer of 20 international conferences and symposium since 1985 and will be one of the organizers of the 20th ICOLD Congress and 29th IAHR Congress to be held in 2000 and 2001 respectively.
Supported by the Government 110 engineers of the Institute as visiting scholars have been sent abroad for at least 6 months¡¯ training, two thirds of them have completed their trainings and became mainstay engineers, leading scientists and leaders at various levels. They formed, together with new graduated Masters and Doctors, a composite personnel resources for the international exchange and cooperation.
