The Department of Geotechnical Engineering, established in 1956, is mainly engaged in the scientific research , engineering consultancy, engineering construction, and engineering management in the following fields: earth-rockfill dams, underground engineering, aseismatic analysis and reinforcement of earth-rockfill dams and foundations, groundwater movement and seepage control, stability analysis and reinforcement measures of dam foundations and slopes, in-situ instrumentation for geotechnical engineering , fly-ash dam engineering and comprehensive utilization of the fly ash (for thermal power plants), foundation treatment of industrial and civil buildings , materials and techniques for chemical grouting. It consists of eight research divisions: Soil Engineering Division, Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering Division, Rock Mechanics and Engineering Division, Centrifuge Modeling Tests Division, Seepage Analysis and Control Division, In-situ Instrumentation Division, Foundation Treatment and Engineering Reinforcement Division, and Blasting Technique and Engineering Division. It has 76 staff members,including a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences , 11 professor senior engineers,30 senior engineers, and 23 engineers;10 of them have Ph.D. degrees and 14 ,Master's , 32 , Bachelor's. The Department is now equipped with various up-to-date testing facilities for experimental studies, including a large scale centrifuge modeling testing machine for soil engineering, a 100 ton large scale cyclic and static triaxial testing machine , a S3D medium-sized cyclic triaxial apparatus, a DTC-158 resonant column apparatus, an electro-magnetic cyclic triaxial apparatus, an explosion simulation laboratory, a wire explosion laboratory, a dynamic photoelastic facility, an automatic closed-up electro-hydraulic servo controlled rock testing machine, a medium-sized direct shear apparatus, a large scale triaxial testing apparatus, a universal triaxial apparatus, a universal consolidometer, a large capacity three dimensional electric resistance network testing device, a set of equipment for in-situ and laboratory measurement of wave velocity, a set of equipment for dynamic and static testing of pile foundations, and a set of equipment for large scale in-situ loading tests. In addition, the department has developed a large number of computation analysis softwares for geotechnical engineering and seismic safety evaluation of earth-rockfill dams. In recent years, following the general policy that science and technology must face economical construction and scientific research must serve for productive construction ,this department, according to its own speciality, has been involved in a number of National Major Scientific and Technological Research Projects, which helped to develop and maintain high level of technology.Moreover, the department has widened its fields of services, such as engineering reinforcement, in-situ instrumentation ,and management.Therefore, the department has not only achieved good economic benefits but also speeded up the conversion of research achievements into productive forces. Also ,the department emphasizes international cooperations and plans to develop overseas markets.
