IWHR's Prof. Hu Chunhong and Prof. Wang Hao, both academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering, headed the research team on a national water security strategy and major policies to conduct a field investigation in Shanxi Province, one of the key research areas that is not only China's important energy base but also has severe water shortage problem.

Meetings were also held with local related institutions to discuss topics such as water resources informatization, high water tariff, utilization of deserted tailingswater, treatment of black and odorous water body, water-food-energy nexus, ecological water quantity in rivers and lakes, groundwater quantity and quality control, water resources investment, water protection and pollution control, energy security and so on.
