The
Earthquake Engineering Research Center(EERC) was established in 1978, and named
as the Department of Earthquake and Blasting Engineering before 1997.
Recent researches in EERC cover the fundamental theories and application of
new technologies in both engineering seismology and earthquake engineering in
the field of civil engineering, with emphasis on hydraulic engineering as well
as electrical energy engineering. These researches are, evaluation of the stability
of tectonic zone, seismic zonation and seismic risk analysis, risk analysis
of reservoir induced earthquake, planning of the array of remote-control seismometers,
development of forecast and alarm system of reservoir induced earthquake, strong
earthquake monitoring on large hydraulic project, field vibration monitoring,
data bank of seismic records, dynamic diagnosis of large concrete dam, seismic
resistance design of large hydraulic projects, vibration reduction of large
scale structures, underground projects as well as high-rise buildings during
earthquake, dynamic property of full scale concrete material of dam, and the
software for static and dynamic analysis of dam including dynamic interaction
of reservoir-foundation-structure and nonlinear behavior at the contact joints.
A large scale shaking table of 6-freedom has been installed in EERC more than
ten years ago, but it is still the best equipment for dynamic test of dam in
the world, honored by Prof. R.W. Clough, because its size, maximum load, as
well as the wide range in frequency. We also equipped with the devices of field
test as well as strong motion seismometers, which are in operation in many hydraulic
projects in China including Three Gorges Project. EERC has the national certificate
of measurement, and national certificate for assessment of seismic risk. EERC
is the chief editorial organization of the Code for Seismic Design of Hydraulic
Structures, and the editorial organization of other 5 national standards.

There are 23 staffs in EERC now, between them one academician
of Chinese Academy of Engineering, two professors, ten senior engineers, and
five engineers, four of them with Doctorial degree and six with Master degree.
EERC provides position for post-doctor research.
With the academic leadership of Houqun CHEN, the academician,
EERC has completed many key projects of the state, National Science Foundation
and Ministry of Central Government, providing very useful solutions related
to earthquake engineering for the many large hydraulic projects. More than 16
research achievements have been granted State or Ministry Prize of Progress
in Science and Technology, and more than 100 academic paper have been published
in recent five years. Special softwares for static and dynamic analysis of gravity
dam and arch dam have been developed.
Several international joint researches have been carried
out in EERC, with the specialists of United States. There are also academic
exchange activities with the specialists of Japan and other contries.
- Considering both contact joints and bottom joints
- Modeling reservoir of 3 times dam
- Modeling the countermeasures of height joint steel bars and dampers
- Modelling real topography & geological condition of dam site
- Transmitting boundary to model radiation damping of infinite foundation
- Dynamic contact force model to model contraction joint of arch dam
